Removing
Remove the starter as directed in chapter 12. Remove the clutch mechanism (chapter 6) or automatic transmission (chapter 7).
If the gearbox is on the engine, remove the clutch release bearing and clutch (chapter 6).
Although the flywheel can only be installed in one position, subsequent assembly can be simplified by making marks between the flywheel and the end of the crankshaft.
Jam the gear teeth with something to keep the flywheel from spinning. Access for work is open through the opening of the starter.
Loosen the bolts and remove the flywheel, being careful (he is heavy).
Inspection
If the teeth on the flywheel ring gear are badly worn or if some of the teeth are missing, it is necessary to remove the ring and install a new one.
The old crown can be removed after cutting the gap between the two teeth with a hacksaw. Take care not to damage the flywheel during this operation and protect your eyes.
A new ring gear needs to be heated to 180-230°C, and it is best if this work is done in a Vauxhall/Opel workshop. A new ring gear must not be overheated, this will worsen the structure of the metal.
The crown should be put on the base by gently tapping with a hammer, and then left to cool gradually - the compression of the metal during cooling ensures a secure fit.
If the contact surface of the friction lining is scratched, there are signs of hairline cracks (caused by overheating), - you can give the flywheel for surface grinding, provided that the total thickness of the flywheel will not be reduced much. Consult a specialist and if grinding is not possible, replace the flywheel.
Installation
Put the flywheel on the end of the crankshaft and align the previously made marks on the flywheel and crankshaft.
Install new flywheel bolts and tighten them to the specified torque in two stages, stopping the flywheel in advance so that it does not rotate.
Where required, install the clutch release bearing and its clutch (chapter 6).
Install the clutch (chapter 6) or automatic transmission as specified in chapter 7.
Install the starter as indicated in chapter 12.
