Caution: Exhaust system components can reach very high temperatures - avoid touching hot components and avoid parking the vehicle on areas covered with flammable objects (fallen leaves, dry grass, debris, etc.)!
Attention: On petrol models, do not use leaded gasoline to refuel a car equipped with a catalytic converter - the lead contained in it in a high concentration is deposited on the surfaces of the working element of the converter, significantly reducing its efficiency and service life!
The catalytic converter is a highly efficient element of the exhaust gas toxicity reduction system and is included in the exhaust system. Inside the working element of the converter, «afterburning» exhaust gases at high temperatures in order to reduce the level of toxic components in them.
When starting a cold engine on eligible AT/Easytronic models (in automatic mode) upshift at higher speeds - this achieves a quick heating of the catalyst to the optimum temperature for its operation.
Make sure the engine settings and adjustments are correct. Deviations in the operating parameters of the ignition, fuel injection and engine management systems can lead to a dangerous over-rich air-fuel mixture, leading to permanent overheating of the catalytic converter. If a misfire occurs, the operation of the car should be suspended until the causes of the malfunction are eliminated, because. fuel that does not burn in the cylinders invariably enters the converter, where it can easily ignite (for the same reason, starting the engine by towing or pushing should be avoided). Remember to also keep an eye on fuel consumption, avoiding running out of fuel, usually associated with misfiring. When driving in forced idle mode (e.g. when descending or braking) The fuel supply is automatically cut off if the gas or clutch pedal is not depressed. But at a high temperature of the catalyst to protect it from damage, this mode is deactivated.
If a malfunction occurs in the engine management system, the corresponding control lamp lights up on the instrument cluster (see Section 16) - follow the given recommendations.
