Caution: Before doing any work near the airbag unit, steering column or instrument panel, turn off the SRS to avoid injury from accidental operation (see Section 11).
1. Remove the airbag module (see Section 12).
2. Bring the front wheels into a straight line and lock the steering column by removing the key from the ignition.
3. Disconnect the horn wiring connectors (see resist. illustration), and with the appropriate configuration and infotainment system. Try to remember the wiring harness routing for later installation. Then, using a wrench, unscrew the bolt securing the steering wheel to the column.
13.3. Disconnect the connectors (2 and 3) horn wiring: 1. Cooling wheel bolt
4. Grasping the wheel with your hands on both sides and shaking it from side to side, remove it from the splines of the shaft. Pass the wiring harnesses through the steering wheel hub.
Attention: The use of impacts when removing the steering wheel is not allowed!
5. Before installing the steering wheel, run and clean the threaded connection. Make sure that the wheels of the car are in a straight position - otherwise the contact block of the steering column switches may be damaged when installing the steering wheel.
6. Install the wheel on the steering column shaft so that the corresponding marks match (see resist. illustration).
13.6. When installing the steering wheel on the steering column shaft, their marks (indicated by arrows) must match
7. Pull the wiring harnesses through the hub and fully seat the wheel on the steering column shaft, while the guide hubs of the steering wheel should enter the corresponding grooves in the contact block (see resist. illustration).
13.7. When installing guides (1) the steering wheel hubs must fit into the grooves (2) contact block
8. Lubricate the new steering wheel mounting bolt with fixing compound (e.g. Lochte 243), screw it in and tighten to the required torque (see specs).
9. Connect the electrical wiring connectors - follow the correct laying of the harnesses.
10. Install the driver's frontal airbag module (see Section 12).
11. On a level road, check the correct neutral position of the steering wheel, if necessary, reinstall it. Check the operation of the horn and remote control (with appropriate equipment) infotainment system.
Note: On models equipped with the ESP system, it is necessary to synchronize the steering angle sensor (see chapter «Controls and methods of operation»).
