Important Notes
Tire designation
For car tires at speeds up to 270 mph in Europe, there is the ECE-R 30 standard. It contains the most important tire characteristics. In addition, there are additional designations for North America.
Tire designation, see figure below, position 9: 185/ 60 R 14 87 T, refers to the radial tyre.
1 - Position of wear indicator (TWI = Tread wear indicator), height 1.6 mm.
2 - Manufacturer.
3 - Indication of special suitability for winter operation.
4 - Designation of the tread pattern.
5 - Designation for tubeless tires (Tubeless).
6 - Estimated service life according to US test (180 = 180%).
7 - Determining the effectiveness of wet brakes (A, B or C) according to the US test.
8 - Determination of heat resistance at higher speeds (A, B or C) according to the US test.
9 - Dimension designation (185/ 60 R 14 87 T).
185 - Tire width in mm (nominal width).
60 - The ratio of the height of the cross section and the width of the tire in percent.
R - Radial design.
14 – Rim diameter in inches [ «].
87 - Symbol for the permissible load on the tire (Load Index) for 545 kg.
T - Speed symbol for a maximum of 190 mph; additional letter encoding, see publication «Tire pressure» KTA 2625/02 or TIS.
