Disassembly
Remove the steering gear as above.
Remove the steering brackets together with the supports.
Remove the clamps securing the protective covers of the rail, remove the covers assembled with the casing (see photo).
shine creeper (see photo).
Loosen the hex stamped nut of the rack stop adjusting bolt. Unscrew the adjusting bolt completely and remove the compression spring through the adjusting bolt hole.
Remove the circlip located in front of the drive gear shaft mounting nut and unscrew the nut from the steering gear housing. Replace sealing ring.
Remove drive gear. The gear is replaced only in assembly with a ball bearing.
Remove the rack stop from the adjusting bolt hole by pressing it with a tool inserted into the drive gear socket. Replace sealing ring.
Press the protective cap off the steering gear housing by hitting the opposite end of the rack with a soft-faced hammer.
This concludes the disassembly. If the rack bushings or drive pinion needle bearing are damaged, replace the steering gear housing assembly.
Thoroughly clean the parts and check their technical condition.
Assembly
Lubricate the rack drive gear and rack with steering grease, part no. 1948 588/90 018 813. Also put approx.
Insert the rack and drive gear into the steering box.
Set the rail to the middle position so that the sinking of the rail to the end of the long part of the crankcase (size «A», see photo) was equal to 61 mm, and the elongated recess of the drive gear shaft was turned to the left when viewed in the direction of travel.
Wrap the drive gear shaft mounting nut and install a new retaining ring using tool KM 473 (see photo).
Install the slider on the rail and fix it together with the steering rods with the bolts of the rods, placing the spacer bushings on the bolts (see photo), made to the dimensions shown in the picture.
Insert rack stop with new O-ring, pressure spring and screw the adjusting bolt into the steering gear housing until significant resistance is felt (5 Nm). In this case, the rail must be in the position of rectilinear movement. From this position, unscrew the adjusting bolt by 20-40°and make sure that the rack moves freely for the entire stroke.
Tighten the locknut using tool KM 472, holding the adjusting bolt from turning.
Install a new protective cap on the short end of the steering gear housing.
Install the protective covers of the rail and the protective cover, having previously removed the spacer bushings from the slider.
Fasten the covers with clamps, pointing the ends of the clamps upwards.
Install the supports and brackets for securing the steering gear housing to the bulkhead, directing the ends of the brackets with a cutout down (see photo).
After installing the steering box, make sure the steering is in the straight ahead position. During a test drive, check that the steering wheel returns to the straight-ahead position after a turn.
