On a cold engine, the self-ignition temperature by compression is not reached, so the engine must be warmed up.
For this purpose, one glow plug is screwed into each combustion chamber. The glow plug consists of a housing with a pressed-in heating rod. As soon as the voltage is applied, within a few seconds the heating rod winding heats up to +850°C, due to which the warm-up time to start will be reduced to 5 seconds. After the preheating system indicator lamp on the instrument panel goes out, the engine can be started.
Preglow duration as well as automatic tracking after start (within approximately 20 seconds), is controlled by the preheating relay with the DDE control unit.
