Attention! If one of the shock absorbers needs to be replaced, the second shock absorber must also be replaced so as not to disturb the suspension geometry.
Removing
1. Block the front wheels, then jack up the rear of the vehicle and place it securely on axle stands.
2. Raise the diagonal arm on the jack to remove the load from the shock absorber.
3. On Sedan models, remove the trunk wall trim panel, then wring out the rubber cover of the upper shock absorber mount with a screwdriver.
4. On Wagon models, fold back the luggage compartment carpet, then unscrew the screws and remove the cover to gain access to the upper shock mount.
5. Unscrew the top mounting nuts and remove the washer and rubber pads (see illustration).
6. On models equipped with a rear suspension damper, put your hand under the rear wheel arch and relieve air pressure through the valve in the shock housing. Release the bracket and disconnect the pressure tube from the shock absorber.
7. Lower the diagonal arm on the jack, then unscrew the bottom mounting bolt with washer and remove the shock absorber (see illustrations).
8. Inspect the shock absorber for signs of wear, damage and deformation. Check the condition of the rubber components. Replace components as needed.
9. Inspect the shock absorber for leaks. Check the condition of the shock absorber rod and its housing. Place the block in a vertical position and check its operation by moving the stem to its full stroke and then several times to a short stroke (50-100 mm). In both cases, the resistance should be even and the same. If the piston jerks, or if the damper's elasticity changed during the test, or if there is any visible sign of wear, replace the damper.
10. If a new shock is being installed, push the stem all the way into the body before reassembly and then move it full stroke three or four times.
Installation
11. Place the shock absorber on the diagonal arm and insert the lower mounting bolt. Make sure the bushing aligns with the notch in the bottom mount.
12. Raise the diagonal lever on the jack and bring the upper end of the shock absorber to the mount.
13. On models with a rear suspension damper, apply some compressed air to the shock absorber. The exact pressure is not specified by the manufacturer, but it is recommended to fill the block until it protrudes through the top mount. Install the pressure tube on the damper valve and attach it with a bracket. Make sure the pressure tube is not tangled with adjacent suspension components.
14. Install the top mount rubber pads and washer. Install a new fixing nut and tighten it with the tightening force regulated by the Specifications.
15. Tighten the lower shock absorber mounting bolt with a tightening torque regulated specifications.
16. On Station wagon models, install the cover panel and secure it with screws.
17. On Sedan models, install the rubber cover on the upper end of the shock absorber.
18. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle to the ground.
19. Check the rear suspension damper.
