The alternating current generated by the generator is converted by the rectifier diodes into direct current, which is used to recharge the battery and power the on-board network consumers. The regulator converts the charging current in such a way that the operating voltage is about 14 V, regardless of the generator speed.
In vehicles with diesel engines, a vacuum pump is attached to the side of the alternator opposite the V-belt pulley. It is driven by the generator shaft and creates the necessary vacuum for the vacuum brake booster.
