Attention! Given that special tools are required to remove and inspect the head, it is recommended that you purchase a new or remanufactured component from an engine remanufacturer. In the end, this can come out cheaper than sorting out the head yourself.
1. On 4-cylinder engines, remove the camshafts and tappets as described in Part A this Section, then remove the cylinder head from the engine.
2. On 6-cylinder engines, remove the camshafts and tappets as described in Part B this Section, then remove the head (ki) cylinder block from the engine.
3. On all models, remove the valves one by one. To do this, compress the springs with a puller, remove the crackers, release the puller, remove the support cup and spring.
Using pliers, carefully remove the valve stem seal from the top of the guide bush, then pull out the spring seat (see illustrations).
4. If the spring seat does not release, tap it lightly with a mallet.
5. Remove the valve from the side of the combustion chamber (see illustration). It is very important to store each valve together with nut, support cups and spring. Also store the valves in the correct sequence if they are to be reused.
