Unscrewing the plug of the expansion tank (engine 2.0 l) | Expansion tank of the engine 2.4 l |
The engine is equipped with a circulation cooling system. A vane water pump is used to circulate the coolant. The cooling system works with a separate expansion tank.
The cooling system removes excess heat generated during engine operation to the environment. Part of the energy of fuel combustion in the engine is released in the form of heat. This heat is able in the shortest possible time to heat the engine to a temperature that can disable it. Some of this heat is used to heat the car interior. Due to the appropriate placement of pipelines, heat exchanger (radiator) and thermostat, the system heats up quickly.
The thermostat regulates the temperature of the coolant in the engine and the heat exchanger of the internal heating system, depending on the thermal state of the engine.
Starting at a certain temperature, the thermostat connects the radiator to the coolant circuit. With a further increase in the liquid temperature, the fan turns on, directing the air flow through the radiator and thus providing additional cooling of the circulating liquid.

Coolant
At the factory, the system is filled with coolant, which should not be changed during the year.
When preparing the coolant, it is necessary to maintain a certain ratio of antifreeze and water. As already mentioned, it is necessary to use the coolant recommended by Opel, since its chemical composition is specially designed for the engine of this car. The volumes of operating fluids are given in the Specifications. The fluid protects the system up to an outdoor temperature of -40°C.
