Generator diagnostics
Diagnostic devices allow you to check the generator by measuring the output voltage or current with the electrical consumers on or off.
Note: The diagnostic tool's clamp meter is an inductive type (measuring range: 0 to 1000 A). They are installed without disconnecting the battery, which allows you to save the memory and settings of the control unit.
Place the clamp meter directly on the generator output, the clamp meter arrow should point towards the generator (The diagnostic tool detects an incorrect installation).
The measurement is carried out in three stages:
- measuring the battery voltage when the ignition key is in the on position «M»;
- measurement without consumers of electrical energy of regulated voltage and output current;
- measurement with the maximum number of consumers of electrical energy of regulated voltage and output current.
Upon completion of the test, the obtained values are used to draw diagnostic conclusions:
- in battery voltage without load < 12.3 V - the battery is discharged.
With power consumers switched off:
- regulation voltage > 14.8 V - voltage regulator is faulty;
- Regulated no-load voltage < 13.2 V or charging current < 2 A - charging circuit malfunction.
With power consumers switched off:
- regulation voltage > 14.8 V - voltage regulator is faulty;
- regulated voltage < 12.7 V - it is necessary to check the output power of the generator in relation to its characteristics: minimum output current of the generator when all consumers of electricity are turned on (at 3000 rpm) - 80 A.
If the measured return current value is low, check:
- generator wear (brushes, etc.);
- battery connections;
- «mass» engine tire;
- generator compliance with technical specifications;
- drive belt tension.
If the output current value is normal, with a reduced regulated voltage value, the cause is not in the generator.
The following reasons are possible:
- the vehicle has too many electrical consumers installed;
- the battery is discharged.
