Removing
Loosen rear wheel mounting bolts.
Raise the rear of the car.
Remove rear wheel.
Release the parking brake.
Disc brakes: remove the caliper and hang it on a wire. Do not disconnect, stretch or twist the brake hose.
Drum brakes: Remove the brake drum.
Remove hub cap.
Attention! Be careful not to damage the cap. Replace damaged cap (water can penetrate through it and damage the bearing).
Loosen and loosen the hub nut.
Remove hub from axle. If necessary, turn the adjusting screw of the parking brake pads.
Remove the seal from the hub with a large screwdriver.
Remove the inner tapered roller bearing from the hub.
Attention! The bearing, if it is to be reinstalled, must be carefully protected from dirt when removed. Tapered roller bearings cannot be washed (Foreign bodies that almost inevitably enter during washing cannot be removed from the bearing).
Knock out the outer races of the outer and inner bearings with a special tool from Opel or a suitable drift. In disc brakes: use the KM-672 tool, placing the KM-266-1 part. In drum brakes: use the KM-266-1, KM-266-2 or KM-266-3 tool, placing the KM-466-2 part.
If the above devices are not available, knock out the clips with a copper punch. In this case, apply a punch in a circle in various places of the clip to avoid distortion.
Attention! Use only a drift made of soft material that prevents burrs from forming.
Wipe the brake drum and hub with a clean cloth soaked in alcohol. Check the integrity of the axle seats, if necessary, replace the axle.
Installation
Insert the outer races of the bearings up to the stop. In workshops, the KM-266-4 fixture and the KM-466-2 part are used for this (for lining). If these tools are not available, a suitable bushing can be used with care.
Fill tapered roller bearing with lithium grease (e.g. Opel ET N1941574 (900001812).
Insert the inner bearing into the hub.
Fill the space between the lips of the oil seal with grease and press the oil seal into the hub. If there is no press, install the oil seal in the hub with a suitable mandrel.
Attention! Be sure to replace the seal. If the seal is damaged or poorly installed, water can enter the bearing and cause it to fail.
Fill the hub cavity with grease.
Push the hub together with the grease-filled bearing onto the trunnion.
Install the washer and tighten the nut by hand.
Adjust bearing play.
Attach the hub cap.
For disc brakes: fit the caliper and tighten its bolts to 80 Nm.
For drum brakes: secure the drum to the hub with a torque of 4 Nm.
Check the operation of the parking brake, adjust if necessary.
Lower the car.
Tighten wheel bolts crosswise to 110 Nm.
