The pistons displace the brake fluid contained in the cylinder. The hydraulic pressure thus formed in the brake system is transferred to the wheel cylinders via pipes and hoses.
In brakes, this pressure presses the brake linings against the brake discs or the brake pads against the brake drums.
Fluid pressure is transmitted by two independent piping systems (brake circuits), and one for one front and one opposite rear wheel (diagonally split dual-circuit braking system).
If one brake circuit fails, then one front wheel and the rear wheel on the other side retain their braking capability. With the front wheel unbraked, you can still steer the machine, and the rear wheel unbraked keeps the rear of the car in a rut.
The handbrake acts on the rear wheels by means of cable rods. To do this, in vehicles with brake discs, small drum brakes are mounted in the brake discs at the rear. When the handbrake is applied, the brake pads are pressed against the braking surface of the drum.
The Vectra is equipped as standard with anti-lock wheels. More details in the next chapter.
Tip: The failure of the brake circuit causes great fear, because. you can push the pedal almost to the floor. Now this means: «press with might and main», because you have to press the pedal much harder, and in addition to all the troubles, the braking distance is also lengthened.
