Simply put, the thermostat determines whether the coolant should be cooled in the radiator or not. Those. he decides: to circulate the coolant through «small» or by «big» circuit of the cooling system.
Which circuit it connects depends solely on the temperature of the coolant. Thus, the operating temperature remains approximately constant.
Thermostat operation
Switching the thermostat causes a box filled with special wax and a valve plate attached to it. When the coolant is heated, the wax melts and expands. Due to its increased volume, the valve plate is forcibly opened.
As the temperature of the coolant rises, the thermostat increases the flow of coolant to the radiator and at the same time closes «small» circuit.
If, while driving, the coolant temperature drops below the desired operating temperature, the thermostat spring presses the valve disc in the direction «closed» and blocks the flow of the coolant until it is warm enough again.
Tip: If the engine «boil» due to a faulty thermostat, only towing will help, or dismantling the thermostat assembly on site. If you decide in favor of dismantling, you must first wait until the temperature of the coolant drops.
